Vision
Envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Palm Jumeirah is the first of three man-made islands in the shape of a palm tree, a cultural representation. This iconic architectural marvel is appropriately considered the Eighth Wonder of the World and is set to become one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, offering more than 30 beachfront hotels, including Atlantis, as well as a wealth of retail and leisure choices.
Development
In the late 1990s, the Dubai government was very keen to promote tourism, but was running out of one major asset – beachfront. Realizing that Dubai only had 70 kms of natural beachfront which had nearly all been used up, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed envisioned creating this man-made island in the shape of a Palm tree whose fronds maximized the shoreline. A symbol of Dubai’s incredible energy, growth, and ambition, Palm Jumeirah was created at an unprecedented scale and combined with Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira has doubled Dubai’s shoreline.
Engineering
Building something of the scale of Palm Jumeirah requires world-class innovation and expertise to overcome unprecedented design, planning, engineering and environmental challenges. Palm Jumeirah’s inner island’s landmass required moving 4.8 million cubic metres of rock into place and then dredging around the clock to transfer an astonishing 92 million cubic metres of sand – that’s enough sand for a two metre high and half a metre wide wall that would circle the globe three times.
Environment
Nakheel completely supports environmental preservation and sustainability in the creation of its developments. Conducting a wide range of studies, and taking action with state-of-the-art technologies, Nakheel has achieved the primary goal of ensuring that construction not only had the smallest possible negative impact on the surrounding environment, but also enhanced the environment beyond the original, pre-development state. Careful monitoring of the waters has improved the ecosystem and as a result marine life is flourishing around Palm Jumeirah.
Features
Proudly positioned as Nakheel’s flagship development, the glamorous, innovative, and ambitious Palm Jumeirah is a truly unique development which has been at the forefront of Dubai’s growth as an internationally recognized tourism and business destination. One of the world’s most exclusive residential addresses to more than 8,000 residents, its attractions vary from Cirque du Soleil to Atlantis, Trump Tower to QE2, and the Golden Mile, a shopper’s paradise with the best names in the retail trade, upscale boutiques and charming cafes.
